The Location

TOKAJ – Established as the world’s first demarcated wine region, Tokaj-Hegyalja has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002. It spans 5700 hectares and is known for grape varieties like Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Sárgamuskotály. The region includes Tokaj town and 26 surrounding settlements. The climate, protected by the Zemplén Hills, is ideal for botrytisation. Wines here, appreciated by European royalty, include the famed Aszú. Tokaj’s main varieties are Furmint and Hárslevelű, with a tradition of cooperage using Zemplén oak.
EGER – Eger, part of the Mátra and Bükk regions, covers 13,000 hectares. Vineyards are found on high plateaus and slopes, influenced by the Northern Mountain Range. Soils include volcanic rhyolite tuff, andesite, loess, and brown forest soils. Eger is known for its unique ability to grow diverse grape varieties.

Second day
UNESCO HERITAGE: HOLLÓKŐ
Departure from Budapest at 8:30. After an hour’s journey, we will arrive in the beautiful small village of Hollókő. Hollókő, besides being a liveable village, is the symbol of the Hungarian traditions, part of the UNESCO Heritage. It is one of the last islands where the traditions are preserved and shared with visitors. The guests are invited for a walk in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hollókő’s Old Village and a visit to the museum. The tour includes visiting the small church with a wooden steeple, the village symbol. Lunch will be served in an old, traditional restaurant.
HOME OF THE RED WINE CUVÉE: EGRI BIKAVÉR
Transfer to Eger, the charming baroque town and home of the red wine cuvée, “Egri Bikavér”. We start exploring Eger in a wine cellar and tasting the local varieties.
After checking in at your hotel, you will have some time to explore the beautiful historical town of Eger and have dinner for yourself in one of the city’s best wine restaurants.

Third day
TOKAJ WINE REGION
We start the tour by visiting the Synagogue of Mád, built in 1795, and learning about the region’s Jewish heritage.
A half an hour drive leads us to one of the most amazing cellar row of Hungary. Almost 300 old huts in two cellar villages in Hercegkút are waiting to be explored. Short walk on the cellar hill, followed by a cellar visit and wine tasting with cold cuts by a small family producer in a very traditional old cellar.
In the afternoon, visit one of the region’s most iconic wineries. Explore its hundred-year-old cellar and taste the “Wine of the Kings, King of the wines,” the famous dessert wine, Tokaj Aszú.
